A SALMON EVENT
Can the salmon still be saved?
Ten years after the last meeting, we have an opportunity to review the condition of the Atlantic salmon both in the Loire and elsewhere. National and international experts will attempt to assess the reasons for the decline inspite of the restoration projects and whether our actions are still in line with current and future challenges. Is it due to climate change or to phenomena at sea or in the river, or to our own activities? We will compare the case of the Loire with the situation and actions undertaken in other highly migratory river basins in France, Denmark, Scotland and on the other side of the Atlantic. Results will be analysed not only at basin level, but also nationally and internationally, through information and tools to raise awareness.

This symposium on ecological continuity and the Atlantic salmon (2 days of plenary sessions and 1 day in the field) follows on from previous events organized by the association in 1993 and 2013, and takes advantage of the recent changes surrounding the redevelopment of the Poutès dam to mobilize local players and government bodies, revive momentum in local areas for the restoration of the Loire-Allier Axis and the Atlantic salmon and to secure commitments from players and decision-makers for highly ambitious projects.

Brioude (43), salmon capital of the Loire Valley
Bordered by the Allier, Brioude, a small town of 6,000 inhabitants has always had a close relationship with one of Europe’s last great wild rivers. Brioude’s reputation for Atlantic salmon owes its origins to the sport and leisure angling that developed in the 20th century. The capture of large specimens (from 9 to 12 kg) attracted anglers from all over France and abroad.
Brioude is also the gateway to the Allier gorges and the basin’s largest salmon spawning grounds.for salmon after a journey of almost 800 km.
The two-day symposium on Thursday and Friday will take place at the Halle aux grains de Brioude, 4 PL la Fayette, 43100 Brioude.

On this page, you will find all the presentations from the “Salmon and People 3” international conference held in Brioude (Haute Loire, France, on 19 and 20 October 2023).
Over the two days of Thursday and Friday, 130 people registered, with a total of 7 different nationalities (France, Germany, England, Ireland, Canada, Denmark and the United States). Speakers and participants from all over France (from the Gaves to the coastal rivers of Brittany, via the Rhine, the Garonne and, of course, the Loire-Allier). They included international experts, as well as local players, government representatives, researchers, engineers, associations, hydropower companies and other users (VNF, professional fishermen, recreational fishermen, etc.). The conference was simultaneously translated into French and English, and some participants followed the conference remotely by videoconference (open by invitation to encourage face-to-face meetings).

Educational activities with schools and leisure centres in Brioude
SOS Loire Vivante – ERN is working in partnership with schools and after-school care centres in the Loire basin on a project to raise awareness of the river and hold creative workshops on salmon. The paintings and works produced by the children were exhibited at the conference.
During the symposium, 50 students from the Brioude Bonnefont agricultural college, some of whom had taken part in the educational programme, attended the plenary session on Thursday morning. And two Brioude nursery classes surprised us by visiting the exhibition on Friday morning.
Thursday evening at the hotel restaurant La Crèche in La Chomette: meal, screening of an extract from the film Dambuster
Dinner to strengthen cooperation between stakeholders
More than sixty people attended the meal organised at the Hotel Restaurant la Crèche in La Chomette. This venue used to be home to experienced salmon fishermen. During the meal, two 15-minute videos on restoring ecological continuity by removing dams were shown.

Visit the Haut Allier on Saturday 21 October
On Saturday, 35 people took part in the day’s visit, including some new participants. After a visit to the Maison du Saumon et de la Rivière in Brioude, which includes aquariums showing the species found on the Allier and the history of the Brivadois region around salmon, two itineraries were proposed.
Itinerary 1: Visit to the Allier Gorges between Brioude and Chanteuges, with a “virtual” visit to the new Poutès dam due to the vigipirate plan preventing on-site visits, in partnership with EDF, and a visit to the Conservatoire National du Saumon Sauvage de Chanteuges, with Nature A Lier.
Itinerary 2: Visit to the Alagnon basin, where major efforts have been made to restore ecological continuity: visits to structures that have been removed and restored in the basin: Grand Pont, Chambezon, Massiac, Stalapos), in partnership with SIGAL.
